Do Shutters reduce heating costs?
Internal shutters are created from hard wood which is thermally dynamic. In layman’s terms this means that they reflect the cold from outside and keep the warmth in.
There have been several studies worldwide comparing the energy efficiency of blinds, curtains and wooden shutters.
In short, most studies conclude that curtains are the least energy efficient with losses
The Glasgow Caledonian University led a study to quantify the energy savings by types of window dressings. The findings were clear.
• Victorian roller blinds – an approximate 28% reduction in heat loss
• Standard roller blinds – an approximate 22% reduction in heat loss
• Conventional curtains – an approximate 14% reduction in heat loss
• Window shutters – an approximate 51% reduction in heat loss
Get the most energy savings by following the below steps:
1. During daylight hours keep your shutter louvres fully open to ensure that any heat from the sun can penetrate the windows.
2. Just before dusk, close all the louvres so any heat remains inside the house.
